The one thing that may annoy some gamers out there,me being one of them,is some of these so-called gaming journalists jumping to quick conclusions and making "snap judgements" on a title while it is in it's incomplete state. A game can take a very bad rap if it is shown unfinished which is a shame. A developer needs to show their title early to get the word out about the game and to build up some hype. Instead of building up hype however,it just gets some people upset because the game looked awful and may not have played well, like most incomplete games do.
One example I want to start with is the game from Microsoft Game Studios and Silicon Knights "Too Human". A build of this game was shown at E3 2006 and it was an extremely early alpha build. It was loaded with bugs and sported what seemed to be a lousy camera angle and rough frame rate. Ever since E3 2006 Too Human has been getting thrashed by gamers and some journalists as well. This right here is the mistake,if you are a hardcore gamer or a journalist running your own site or blog, you should be smart enough to know that videogames go through a rough looking state while in development. Polish is actually one of the last elements applied to a game in the development stage. So here we are around two years later and we now have a demo of Too Human and the game has just gone gold, and guess what?,the game is excellent. In my professional opinion this is one of the best looking games on the Xbox 360 console. It runs very fluidly,I have had probably around a dozen enemies on screen along with my crew all in combat and the frame rate never skipped a beat.
Now we are going to move on to a more recent title,Resident Evil 5. This year at E3 2008,Capcom showed off their upcoming fifth iteration of their long running survival horror series and while looking amazing, the game gets greeted by negative remarks about the artificial intelligence,or lack there of,and some are already saying that they are going to pass on this game for that very reason. Well guess what?,the title is not slated for a release 'til next year. Capcom knows about the AI issues, that is why they are not releasing the title right now. If the game was slated for a release this month or the next, then we would have a reason to worry, but Capcom knows that the game has a little while to go,and that's why we won't be seeing the game on store shelves 'til next year.
All I am saying is that us gamers, gaming enthusiasts and gaming journalists need to just hold off until the game gets it's official release. Let's give the developers a fair amount of time until we make our snap judgements. Most likely by the time the game is done, there won't be anything to complain about. Too Human is a big example of this. Compare the E3 2006 video against the marketplace demo and then you'll see that games do evolve during development, evolve for the better.
